Album of the Month - GENERALS

SPECIAL OFFERS

Over the years, Saddle Creek has been fortunate enough to release hundreds of albums (we just crossed the LBJ-300 milestone in our catalog), each of which constitutes a unique thread in the fabric of the label. We’ve poured unimaginable amounts of time and energy into helping bring the music in our catalog out into the world, and we’re incredibly proud of each and every one of our releases. In reflecting upon this, we realized that many people may have missed an album or two the first time around, might need a reminder to listen to an old favorite again, or may just be discovering Saddle Creek for the first time with some of our newer artists.

With this in mind, we are launching our new ‘Album of the Month’ feature, which will spotlight one album each month from the SC catalog, extend exclusive offers on these albums, and hopefully help you find a favorite album you just might not have discovered yet. Each featured album will be presented across our social pages with a mixture of archival photos, personal retrospectives from the artists and those they've influenced, playlists, videos, live sessions, and much more.

We’re kick-starting the series today with The Mynabirds’ 2012 LP, GENERALS, a record of “openhearted, politically engaged, feminist pop” (Pitchfork). The follow-up to 2010’s What We Lose In The Fire We Gain In The Flood, GENERALS found Laura Burhenn letting loose, a colorful connection of stomps, claps, and sweeping orchestral maneuvers was boldly produced by the much-missed Richard Swift.

Both a musical protest and a fully-realized concept album, GENERALS has a political bite that still lingers to this day, Burhenn’s anger and energy every bit as relevant and necessary as it ever was.

In celebration of Burhenn’s achievement, Saddle Creek is proud to present a month-long celebration of the record which includes a special vinyl bundle, a playlist by Burhenn curated from music which inspired her work on GENERALS, live sessions, exclusive photos, reflections on the album’s impact, and much more.

Visit the Saddle Creek Store for your chance to pick up an exclusive GENERALS bundle, which includes the few remaining copies of the album on white vinyl along with a copy of the GENERALS : REMIXED 12" vinyl EP and the Body of Work 7", all at a special price. Standard black vinyl, CD, and digital formats are also on sale through the end of September, 2019.

Follow Saddle Creek on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for exclusive GENERALS content throughout the month of September.

The original touring band for the album will be getting back together for a run of dates starting on September 23rd. Check the Tour Dates section below to see a full rundown of where they'll be performing.

With Trying Not to Have a Thought, Algernon Cadwallader juggle intrinsic musical connection and shrewd lyrical intention with remarkable poise. The album’s title perfectly captures that dual approach: the effort to resist being mentally bogged down by the bottomless list of daily atrocities, and the band’s decision to let their unspoken connection guide this rejuvenated take on their classic sound. “This is just what comes out of us when these four people get in a room,” Helmis says. And this record is exactly that: an Algernon Cadwallader album that's leisurely, intensely, tremendously their own.
