They thought the name was funny, they tried to shoehorn their creative process in before their darling spaz of a singer left town for school, and what do you know, it turned out pretty OK after all.

You might peg some far-off planet as their home base rather than Lincoln, Neb., but you'd be wrong. UUVVWWZ hail from the heartland, but they're not pouring spirits over their wounds. No, they're making new, fresh ones. Their maniacally jazzy, avant-garde noise rock might not soothe what ails you (especially if that ailment is a six-week migraine), but this Deerhoof-fights-the- Yeah-Yeahs-while-MagikMarkers-officiate chunk of mayhem starts ever so preciously on "Berry Can" with Teal Gardner reciting, "I like the blackberries, cause they cannot entangle me," but before you know it, you're smacked on the head with topsy-turvy "Jap Dad," the stabbing guitar and piercing crooning on "Green Starred Sleeve," spacesmothered "The Sun" and the blues-punk, back-alley clown assault on closer "Hum Jam." Those with little patience left in reserve might leave this party downright furious. But that makes me happy, as do UUVVWWZ, who've etched out a spot on my 2009 robot party mix.
