What the Toll Tells

Two Gallants have come a long way in the four years since their impromptu gigs at the 16th Street BART station. In fact, if the word of mouth surrounding the San Francisco duo is any indication, local Next Big Thing status can't be far off. On their raucous second album, What the Toll Tells (Saddle Creek), Adam Stephens and Tyson Vogel whip themselves into a formidable folk-rock frenzy using only guitar, drums and harmonica. But while comparisons to the similarly primitive White Stripes are inevitable, Two Gallants' poetic, death-obsessed songs are less indebted to the blues than to their label mates' emo inflections and, as lyrics like "If you got a throat, I got a knife" suggest, some seriously sinister Americana of yore. Headlining this show is the popular U.K. act Bloc Party, previewing songs from its highly anticipated follow-up to last year's Silent Alarm (Vice); also performing are Broken Social Scene, a Canadian indie-rock collective featuring members of bands like Stars and Metric, and Denmark's Mew.
