It's already hard enough coming up with a kicking band name and even better lyrics, so I have to hand it to Tokyo Police Club for being able to conquer both. The Canadians were in town Monday to present their post-punk guitar droves and catchy rhythm section to the crowd at the Independent in San Francisco.

Equipped with an impressive light installation set-up on stage, the band grooved and sang their way through their 70-minute set, the lights flickering, booming, and spazzing at timed flashes and patterns to their beats. They reminded me both of a male-based Metric and of a calmer distant cousin to Arcade Fire. Tracks like "Nature Of The Experiment" employ this weird melodic guitar riff sprinkled in the hypnotic drum line, which was still haunting me as we poured out of the venue later to gallivant Divisadero Street.

This night was an opportunity to screen new material off Elephant Shell, Tokyo's new full-length to come in April. "In Cave" is a bit quieter in noise, but still carries the hook I crave: a great underlying rhythm line, sweet keys, and a nice, fresh attitude of DIY indie. Although the guys looked nervous for the first few songs live - adjusting vests, falling over feet, continual clearing of the throat - our friends from up North were able to shake off the anxiety and deliver a solid show. Mad props go to Graham Wright, who my group zeroed in on for the night. That dude can dance so hard while somehow keep in pitch with his keys, it was ridiculous. We were having enough of a time trying to dance and drink a beer, or take pictures.
