Although her former bandmate, John Davis, reemerged first from the debris of their short-lived D.C. act Georgie James with his new power- pop band Title Tracks, Laura Burhenn has unquestionably had the most dramatic rebirth this year with her stately new solo project. We wouldn't have grieved so much over Georgie James' breakup had we known it would've awakened an immense vocal and musical presence in Burhenn that immediately thrusts her into the thick of the current ruling class of American female greats like Cat Power, Neko Case and Jenny Lewis. Gracefully merging soul, gospel and pop, her Saddle Creek debut (What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood) this spring was one of the year's best albums, a golden-toned triumph rich and radiant with classic elegance and heritage.
