What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood
The singer-songwriter's now playing a blend of alt-folk and soul music with her new band The Mynabirds. The group hits Denver's hi-dive on Monday.
"I got to tour all over the world with Georgie James, but it definitely wasn't where we wanted to go in our lives," Burhenn said. "I started working as a solo artist, but I made the new record with Richard Swift. We put the finished product out under The Mynabirds.
"I grew up listening to classic pop, R&B and gospel. I wanted to make a record that sounded like Neil Young meets Motown. The songs are all about universal experiences of loss and recovery -- that's something everyone's familiar with."
The Mynabirds are touring behind their debut, What We Lose in the Fire, We Gain in the Flood. The CD features guest appearances by members of the Monsters of Folk, Bright Eyes and These United States.
"We really let this music happen organically," Burhenn said. "I feel like I'm starting from scratch again, but I'm trying to do it without any expectations."
