I was sitting at work today, reading the new music reviews at Buddyhead and they had a review of the split CD between Son, Ambulance and Bright Eyes. There's no reason to beat a dead horse here, so allow me to share with you what Buddyhead had to say about this group. "Son, Ambulance's songs didn't impress me. He sounds like a poor man's Ben Folds Five who happens to be spending a lot of time with a slower and much drunker Belle & Sebastian, minus Ben's lady killer sense of humor...Son's voice also at times reminds me of the singer from the Smoking Popes, in the sense that it sounds to me like he's singing about Jesus and how he's gonna go to heaven on a golden escalator the whole time, even if he isn't. That's a big turn off for me.
This just seems very lackluster to me, something I might be able to catch at the local college open mic night. Everything about him from his voice to his lyrics to the songs themselves is screaming 'average!' when placed next to the obviously very talented Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes." I would add that when placed next to not only Conor Oberst, but all of the stuff on Saddle Creek, this is really poor. Even on its own, it's just incredibly ordinary. Nothing comes out and grabs you. It's as though he almost wrote it to keep from throwing any hooks in. It's all quite odd and adds up to ten songs of incredibly sub-par material from a normally respectable label.
