At the time of their first release, Son, Ambulance were simply referred to as Ambulance. The recording in question was a split EP with Bright Eyes, which led this faithful correspondent, upon seeing the cover, to ponder idealistically if Conor Oberst had brilliantly renamed his band The Bright Eyes Ambulance after the fashion of The Jimi Hendrix Experience or Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. The reality of the situation, however, proved such a disappointment that I ignored the actual songs of Ambulance for a good seven months. Then, of course, I looked at the EP again and noticed that the band was, in fact, called Son, Ambulance all along. I should note that I can't actually read.

Not to disrespect the band, but we suspect they get overlooked that way a lot, sharing a label with not only Bright Eyes, but also The Faint, Cursive, and Now It's Overhead. If you've slept on them in the past, though, you'll have a chance to reconsider this October 26th, when Saddle Creek will release Son, Ambulance's first album in three years, titled Key. Songwriter and bandleader Joe Knapp is now joined by his brother Daniel on keyboards and his cousin Dylan Strimple on guitar, with the genetically detached Erica Peterson (bass) and Corey Broman (drums) rounding out the band. The fivesome will play a handful of shows between now and the album's release, basically just driving out to New York City for the Saddle Creek CMJ show and then heading back to Omaha with a couple gigs across the way. A tracklist first, for the listing of tracks:
