IT'S unlikely that you will ever hear such disparate locations as Haiti and Alabama mentioned in the same sentence, let alone in reference to a musical project. But those are exactly the places where O+S - a new collaborative project between Orenda Fink (Azure Ray) and Cedric LeMoyne (Remy Zero) - was born.

Looped recordings of Haitian street noise and the sounds of a church service in Alabama acted as starting points for an experimental writing process which led the pair to recording an entire album together.

The project began when Fink was invited to partake in an art residency at the esteemed Bernis Center of Contemporary Arts in her adopted home of Omaha, Nebraska. The idea was to collect atmospheric field recordings from different locations, then return to attempt to craft the captured moments into loops, and eventually pop songs.

Speaking from a tour stop in Portland, Fink said the challenging assignment quickly took on a life of its own once she and songwriting partner LeMoyne - aka Scalpelist - sat down to pore over the collected recordings.

"I was sitting in a room with headphones on picking out parts that I thought would be good for making loops, and I knew I would need some help.

"We have been friends for a really long time, and we have often talked about doing something together. It was the right time, and there was no pressure. The whole process just took care of itself," she said.

With the help of LeMoyne, Fink was able to mold the sonic snapshots into song structures and the result is a beautiful, haunting collection of tracks that she describes as being influenced by David Lynch soundtracks, 10cc and old 4AD records. Producer Michael Patterson (Beck, Notorious B.I.G, Ladytron) was brought in to help to piece the compositions together, before the duo faced another challenge - how to re-create the dream-like soundscapes in a live setting.

"From the beginning, I said I didn't think it was something that we could play live," admits Fink. "But we have some great players out with us - it's a six piece band. We're just getting started, but so far it's been going well."

O+S arrive in Los Angeles on Monday, March 16, and will play Silverlake Lounge with Great Northern, who are gearing up for the release of their new album, Show Me Where the Light Is, on April 28. O+S self-titled debut comes out on Saddle Creek Records on March 24.
