Welcome to the family.

Old Canes, from Lawrence, Kan., is one of the latest additions to the Saddle Creek Records roster. Tonight, the band opens for singer-songwriter David Dondero at Slowdown, the venue owned by Saddle Creek execs.

Old Canes leader Chris Crisci, also of indie band the Appleseed Cast, suspected Saddle Creek might jump on the group's new release after hearing from friends that the first Old Canes album was often played in the record label's offices.

"I talked to Tim Kasher (of Cursive) and asked him if Saddle Creek would be interested because they were at the top of my list," Crisci said. "He contacted the folks there and I talked to them, and that was all she wrote."

"Feral Harmonic," released in October, came together piece by piece. In between tours and recording with Appleseed Cast, Crisci would record a few songs each year. He and several friends from the Lawrence music scene ended up recording 16 songs for the album, but only 10 made the final cut.

Working on two projects, Crisci writes a lot of music.

"I basically know what I'm going to be writing before I write it. I know I have a song idea, I know it's going to be for Old Canes and I know what it's going to sound like," Crisci said.

Lyrics are the last thing he gets to, and he often rewrites. The song "Little Bird Courage," for example, went through five different edits before its final version.

That song is Crisci's favorite of the album. He said it's about overcoming fear and having courage to do what you feel you should.

"Life is short. Live life the way you want to. Don't be afraid to live life on your own terms," he said. "Every time you capitulate and let fear take over, that minute is wasted. You know, live life you know the way is right or the way that you want to. That's kind of scary to do and is often not the most financially responsible thing to do. But in the end, what matters? Did you have a life that you were proud of, or were you able to buy a house?"
