The Ugly Organ

03/04/2003 | NME | Album Review
Songs in the key of strife from latest hotbed of talent.

Are all residents of Omaha, Nebraska in brilliant bands? NME only asks because the Midwest hometown of Conor 'Bright Eyes' Oberst and The Faint has thrown up another great record in 'Cursive Presents The Ugly Organ'.

Cursive represents the unlikely collision between The Cure, At The Drive-In and Oberst's Desaparecidos. This, their fourth LP is dramatic (hear the strings on' Art Is Hard'), cathartic (see the testimonies of 'The Recluse', 'Sierra') and features brilliant evocative lyrics (like 'Some Red Handed Slight Of Hand': "This is the blood I found on my hands/After I wrote this album/Play it off as stigmata for crossover fans".)

Occasionally Cursive are more pompous than compelling. But for the most part, .... Organ' hits all the right notes
