Cursive releases tend to have consistent themes, making each one a concept album in form, if not name.

With its latest, I Am Gemini, the band goes all in, writing what amounts to a post-punk/post-emo musical about twin brothers who were separated at birth. It even provides a full libretto instead of the usual liner notes.

Frontman/songwriter Tim Kasher, speaking over the phone Monday from a tour stop in Chicago, said he likes doing albums with overriding themes, but they don't always turn out the way he intends.

"I've wanted to take it that extra step further, but things didn't go right for whatever various reasonsóthey would fall through," he said. "This time around, it kept working out. I kept pushing it to completion."

Though he likes creating concept albums, and though his latest basically amounts to a recorded musical, Kasher admitted that he doesn't spend a lot of time appreciating other people's attempts at those art forms.

"I like musicals in theory, but I don't really watch a lot of them," he said. "I also don't have any major propensity for concept albums, although I think they're interesting when people do them. Even when I come across concept albums, I've never really sat down and tackled (listening to) one myself, which is odd, I guess."

Accordingly, Kasher said he doesn't mind if his own listeners don't take the time to analyze the complexity of his creations.

"When I write stuff like this, I'm more than happy to let people read into it as much or as little as they want to," he said. "Since these are albums and this is pop music, I take no offense to people listening to this or that songójust giving the album a few spins. I fully understand the way that music is consumed."

"Certainly, it's more fun for me to come across people who have put more effort into it, and really put some time into it, because that's the main intent."

Being Cursive's vocalist, Kasher plays all of the characters in I Am Gemini. Though it was fun, he said, he avoided getting too involved in inventing distinct personalities.

"There is still a certain coolness to playing rock 'n' roll, and you don't really want to don your various caps and start singing in a British accent for one of your characters. It would be like R. Kelly, taking on different voices."

Given that the album is intended to be heard as a whole, Kasher was asked how fans react to hearing its songs onstage.

"I feel like the reaction is goodóor (the fans are) just so good at being polite," Kasher laughed.

"Musically, from our point of view, it is the best-sounding stuff we're playing live," he added. "It is not a stretch to say that."
