he Complex 7: Cursive Frontman Tim Kasher

Mama, I'm Swollen. Giggle. It's difficult for the mature minds at Complex to look at the title of Cursive's sixth album without wandering to thoughts of incest. Of course, we can find a dick joke in anything (especially your skinny jeans). Fortunately, we're not too juvenile for Tim Kasher, frontman for the indie rock trio from Omaha, Nebraska, which also features Matt Maginn (bass, vocals) and Ted Stevens (guitar, vocals).

Though Kasher's lyrics are often heady, referencing literature in songs about sex and social obligation, the 34-year-old singer and guitarist knows a little something about being a boy trapped in a man's body, er, struggling to act like a grown-ass man. He even sings about it on the new album, and he spoke about it when we caught up with him on the set of a new Cursive music video shoot to ask him the Complex 7. Thanks, TK. Now we don't feel so awkward about ignoring women, eating cracker "dinners" and always grabbing at low-hanging fruit. Pause. To hear songs from Mama, I'm Swollen and check out Tim Kasher's answers to the Complex 7, venture on…

#1: WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER ONE DEAL-BREAKER FOR A POTENTIAL GIRLFRIEND?

Tim says: This'll probably seem cold, but this is a cold question. [Laughs.] Probably lack of ambition, like there's not a greater goal that they're headed towards. I have lots of friends who are creatures of the couch. There's nothing wrong with it, but maybe when it's in a more intimate setting it's not for me. Not to sound like such a go-getter myself… I just prefer being with people who don't need me.

#2: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SNEAKER OF ALL TIME?

Tim says: The adidas Stan Smith. They're very straight, kind of conservative, no flash. [Laughs.] Coming from the Midwest middle class, they have kind of like an air of country club to them. They're specifically made for tennis! I think there's something in the name Stan Smith too. It's so plain that it expresses the right amount of anonymity and humility.

#3: WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?

Tim says: I like when a movie moves me to tear up, but I can't think of what I've seen lately. Maybe Junebug? I love that movie. I always remember the first revelatory cry that I had where I was like, "Wow, I'm crying." I was old enough that I was past the crying-for-attention phase. I was watching The Color Purple by myself, and when the sisters find each other at the end, man, that got me. I used to have a girlfriend in high school and every time Ghost was on HBO, we'd have a contest to see who could cry the most. I think we judged based on who was convulsing most.

#4: IF YOU HAD A WEEK VACATION, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Tim says: I guess I'd go to the pyramids. For some reason, seeing the pyramids is always something I've held in the highest regard, and I'm still in a place in my life where I can't say if I'll ever be in Egypt seeing the pyramids. That seems like a drag though because there would be a two-day lag on either side. But I guess it'd still be three days, so yeah, if I was ever given this trip, I would use it on seeing the pyramids.

#5: WHAT HAS TO BE IN YOUR FRIDGE AT ALL TIMES?

Tim says: I do try to eat healthy, so I feel guilty about eating a lot of cheese. I always have cheeses and maybe summer sausage for cheese and crackers and sausage. I tend to buy whatever is made of fifty per cent milk, like sharp cheddar. I'm not fancy.

#6: WHAT IS THE WORST WAY YOU'VE BROKEN UP WITH SOMEONE?

Tim says: The old "ignore her and maybe she'll go away" [technique]. It's pretty terrible. It was a casual enough relationship, but still, it was pretty callous. I was an asshole about it. The woman punched me for that. I actually thought it was pretty cool that she asserted herself and hit me. Not that it sparked the relationship again. That was more like the period on our relationship.

#7: WHAT IS THE MOST EMBARASSING PIECE OF CLOTHING YOU'VE EVER WORN?

Tim says: Coincidentally, it might be what I'm wearing right now. I'm walking around in these women's white pants from Old Navy, a white shirt and a blue vest with a matching tie about to play a wedding band in this [music] video. I guess it's worse when you put the four of us together. It's just so white. I actually kind of like it, but I don't know much about fashion.
