Ever since Omaha, Nebraska-based outfit Cursive turned heads with their divorce-inspired 2000 effort Domestica, fans have come to follow the band as each subsequent release dug at something deeper, a place where lurking emotions are brought out into the open and set against raging, forceful music. Their '03 follow-up The Ugly Organ explored such dark themes as empty romance and murder, with their fifth album Happy Hollow expanding their sound by adding orchestral elements to the mix. So it's surprising to hear their sixth release Mama, I'm Swollen, a digression from their signature sound - but not necessarily in a way that you would expect.
