Joel Peterson (the Faint, Beep Beep) strikes hard with an angular batch of tunes that calls to mind early Brian Eno and other studio eggheads less concerned with shaking their booty than shaking their psyche. Written and recorded in almost complete isolation Inside/Absent has at times a cold, clinical feel to it, albeit a rather inviting one — "Burn My Body" and "The Distance Is Nearsighted" feel thrown away, perhaps best relegated to the demo drawer for all eternity and that's exactly why they work. What you miss in polish you gain in insight and integrity.
