Under the moniker Bright Eyes, Conor Oberst has singlehandedly transcended the ritualized commiseration process associated with the arsenal of heart-on-sleeve singer-songwriters. At first, his songcraft and vocal attack may initially deliver as obnoxious, but the triumphantly annoying soon gives way to the genuinely heartfelt. And when I say heartfelt, I don't mean it in a breathy whisper, my girlfriend dumped me kind of way. I mean it in a nauseating, gut-wrenching, feverish, 19-year-old, honest-to-God, horrifying-absolute-truth kind of way. Oberst recognizes that catharsis is cheap, so you don't feel his pain, you fear it.
