4. SOFT(ISH) ROCK OF THE WEEK (PART II):

And while I'm on the subject of male bands that don't piss me off, 'EVERY DAY AND EVERY NIGHT' (Saddle Creek, out now), the latest EP from Nebraska's BRIGHT EYES, is all quavering vocals and dark observations. Musically, it's lulling bedroom rock, but lyrically, songs like "A Perfect Sonnet" ("I believe that lovers should be tied together and thrown into the ocean in the worst of weather and left there to drown, left there to drown in their innocence") satiate a need for cynical perspectives and caustic sincerity that doesn't resort to baseness. So regardless of how many times I have to change the radio station to avoid being accosted by assholes, there are bands out there that are slowly restoring my faith in the male species.
