Lifted or The Story is in the Soil....

At one point I wrote about this record: "There were times when listening to that record I felt things that I hadn't felt since the first time I had heard 'Ok Computer' and Sarah Harmer's 'You Were Here.'" Seems funny looking back on this now, but for the first few weeks I owned the record, I was in absolute love with it. Despite aging badly, I'd still say its one of the best albums released this year and a major accomplishment for Conor Oberst. The initial love I had for the album probably had a lot to do with the album not blowing ass like I had expected it to. His love of Cure shines through most of these songs and I think I can say without opposition that "You Will. You? Will. You? Will. You? Will" and "False Advertising" are the best things he's put to tape yet. He's still extremely young and if the next record is as much an improvement over "Lifted" as it was over "Fevers and Mirrors," the indie world might just be forced to find another black sheep to uniformly hate. Chris Carraba is still breathing, right?
