Last year, The Blue Note celebrated its milestone 30th birthday with an outdoor bash headlined by two of hip-hop's greatest: Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube. Birthday number 31 will be a quieter, indoor affair but promises to be no less dynamic. The celebration will be led by an unlikely party captain _ the petulant, poetic, prophetic singer-songwriter Conor Oberst. Yet, in many ways, Oberst's band Bright Eyes is an apt act for the occasion. The group's deep, dynamic meditations serve as an example of the scope of great music the downtown venue has provided for 31 years. All Music Guide praised "The People's Key," the band's latest, calling it "Bright Eyes' poppiest record by some measure, trading anthems with the weight of America on their shoulders for sculptured miniatures."
