Meaningful lyrics, unexpected set lists, great onstage presence and an array of instruments: All of these characteristics make a Bright Eyes concert, which will soon hit The Blue Note's stage for the venue's 31st anniversary. Bright Eyes' intense, metaphorical lyrics inspire fans to sing along and search for the meaning at the same time to make the upcoming concert a must-see. "I've been a fan for probably six or seven years," Robert Litton, 27, says. "This will be my fifth time going to a concert. They always put on a great show. It's different every time, and you never know what songs he's going to play." The popular indie-rock band will perform songs from its latest album, The People's Key. The album, which was released in February, shows guitarist and vocalist Conor Oberst's sophistication and progression with lyrics as the songs become more confident compared to the band's previous songs. Singles such as "A Machine Spiritual (In the People's Key)" demonstrate Oberst's new standard for lyrics. Oberst sings, "The people's key ringing, filling everything. The theme repeats thinner than the galaxy." The band, from Omaha, Neb., began in 1998 and performed at The Blue Note in June 2009. The band gained notoriety when Rolling Stone named its 2002 album, Lifted or The Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground one of that year's best. Later, the band's single "First Day of My Life," from its 2005 album, I'm Wide Awake It's Morning, became one of its most popular songs to date. "Conor Oberst is a phenomenal lyricist," Kaitlyn Hibdon, 22, says. "The music itself is nothing impressive, but it's the thought-provoking lyrics that draw me in. Listening to Bright Eyes is like losing yourself in a world that Oberst has created."
