Fevers and Mirrors
Twenty-year-old Connor Oberst had barely croaked through the first song on Fevers and Mirrors before tears welled up in my eyes. On the verge of emotional collapse, pouring forth the saddest songs you've ever heard, Oberst has been likened to a gothic Elliot Smith for good reason. His haphazardly poetic lyrics revolve around powerful imagery-he describes his brother's tragic death in a bathtub and gives a tour of his own suicidal depression. Oberst's music is bare-boned, heartbreaking and backed by a slew of odd instruments, setting the stage for a tortured musical ride.
