Fevers and Mirrors
5/29/2000 | A Smaller Footprint | Album Review
There has been a lot of hype surrounding this band lately, and I have to say that I just don't think it's warranted. Bright Eyes is essentially one guy, Conor Oberst. His music is "depressed kid with acoustic guitar" stuff that comes off pretty elementary for the most part. The guitar is accented with drums and some keyboard stuff, while the vocals are tortured whisper that elevates into a strained whine in most of the songs. Also, the guitar playing is marginal, while the actual singing is really off key for the most part. Bright Eyes song writing has also been hailed by many, according the press kit, but it seems pretty monotonous to me. Conor will be on tour all summer, playing clubs and theatres, but it would make more sense being played in stairwells and closets. Bright Eyes has created
their own genre.."don't forget your blankey-core" I honestly had a hard time listening to this all the way through.
