Husband-and-wife duo Chris Senseney and Stefanie Drootin-Senseney, also known as Big Harp, have their debut album, White Hat, coming out Septmember 13th. You can stream the entire album by going to American Songwriter and having a listen. It's well worth your time, and so is reading their City Guide of Omaha, where they tell you all about their favorite hang outs, bands, restaurants and bars. City Guide to Omaha by Big Harp Stef: Although neither of us are from there originally, Omaha is the city where my husband Chris and I met and got married, and it's also the place where I really came into my own as a musician. Before I started playing in the Omaha scene I'd mostly been in punk rock bands. I'd never had to learn chords or anything ? we just played and came up with songs together. In Omaha, though, I was joining bands that already had songs. They'd tell me what the chords were, and I just had to figure it out on the fly. The first Omaha band I was really into was Slowdown Virginia. One of my friends in L.A. had picked up their album on tour, and when they brought it back we all flipped out over it. Later I met them and a bunch of other Omaha people when my band at the time's van broke down on tour. We started setting up L.A. shows for Commander Venus, and they would set up Omaha shows for us. Eventually I started playing bass in Bright Eyes, moved to town, and then joined the Good Life. Chris is from a little town about six hours northwest of Omaha. When I met him he was playing in a bunch of bands I loved ? Baby Walrus, Flowers Forever, and my friend Orenda's band Art in Manila. Bangkok Cuisine: Bangkok Cuisine (19th and Farnam) is by far the best Thai resturant I have been to. I went to a restaurant in New Zealand that came close, but no one has a Pad Thai as good as Bangkok. Most places make theirs sweet and orange-colored ? Bangkok's is brown, salty and perfect. Plus the owners and staff there make you feel like you are part of the family. We went there once when our son was about 6 months old. They laid down a blanket for him to hang out on and took him back in the kitchen for a tour. Film Streams At The Ruth Sokolof Theater: Film Streams (1340 Mike Fahey St) is a nonprofit movie theater that shows classic movies and independent films. They do really cool things, like bringing in directors for talks and having local musicians provide scores for silent movies. The Slowdown and The Waiting Room: The Slowdown (14th and Cuming) and the Waiting Room (62nd and Maple) are our two favorite clubs in town, and the best places to go see touring bands and check out the local scene. There are some great bands in Omaha ? some of my favorite new discoveries are Conduits, Honeybee and Gus & Call. The Slowdown was kind enough to host a benefit for the Omaha Girls Rock camp I founded. They also let us hold the final camp showcase there. Brothers Lounge: Going to Brothers (38th and Farnam) is like drinking a beer in your living room, if your living room is a dimly-light watering hole frequented by musicians, artists, average joes and the occasional bat. You should run into at least five people you know, and sometimes more like fifty. Dan McCarthy's Backyard: It's a hot spot for badminton and barbecue, but I'm pretty sure it's invite-only. Dan (McCarthy Trenching) is a great songwriter and musician, and one of our best friends in the world. Even if you can't find him, backyard get-togethers are still one of the best things to do in Omaha.
