This is post-Gang-of-Four guitar-driven craziness, organized around a rough concept that I guess has something to do with the disappearance of nature and the emergence of a totally fluorescent, business-driven culture. Sounds like these guys have been listening to XTC and Wire and Pere Ubu along with the Gang of Four. The press material says the lyrics stand alone, true enough. "Look at the songbirds/Now, kill them/They invade our airspace/They don't pay their taxes" is a pretty good example of what we have here. "Teach nature a lesson" is another one--that could have been the title of this record.

I don't find this particularly original, but it's good. I think we need more music like this. Being a fan of the Gang of Four, Wire, XTC and Captain Beefheart, all of whom are the stylistic antecedents of Beep Beep, I applaud anyone willing to make an overtly political statement about modern corporate-sponsored deadness in this conformist era. Their press material has a photo of them dressed in western gear sitting on the back of a pickup truck. The cover artwork features two cowpokes comparing notes on last night's sitcoms by a watercooler.

They do this post-1980 thing as well as anyone I've heard; the drumming is relentless, the singer sounds like he's on helium (shades of Crocus Behemoth) and they've got the guitar moves down perfectly. I do find the words a bit obvious: "Captive ferns caress finger-leaves across a name etched in office glass/There is a contract between the enslaved and the master/Maintaining nature/Equal parts water/Sunlight is rationed/The fern has been misted." But that's all right; their hearts are in the right place. I hear Gang of Four themselves are getting back together to play some dates; maybe Beep Beep could open for them. And I find it interesting that this style has become part of rock's lingua franca and has penetrated the Great American Heartland. More power to them.
