I was a bit sceptical about Azure Ray, but a friend of mine who knows I am a huge fan of Hope Sandoval (aka Mazzy Star) told me I'd dig them. Boy, was she right! On the way home from her house, this album turned an hour long, tedious subway ride into a wispy, ethereal expedition. The melodies are tender, thought-provoking and crafted with an unadulterated purity that rewards the ear with every listen. There is something strikingly feminine about this album, but in a corset-wearing, crushed velvet, black magic kind of way that would make any sensitive man blush. These ladies have a lot going on while leaving room for growth. Check it out, but beware because it's contagious.
