Hold On Love
Author: Doug Wallen
Despite early output marked by grizzled sorrow, Crooked Fingers' Red Devil Dawn finally found leader Eric Bachmann (also ex-Archers of Loaf) exorcising some of his demons. Songs that once would have lurched now swell into heartfelt, baroque flourishes, and even Bachmann's gruff voice--which first sounded too much like Tom Waits--is softened every now and again. There are still plenty of shadows (see "Bad Man Coming"), but then a tune like "You Threw a Spark" punches brightly through. For the past few years, Bachmann has also lent his moody presence (as producer) to Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor, who splintered from Bright Eyes' touring band to form Azure Ray. As such, they've garnered much acclaim, and with the new Hold on Love , more is sure to follow. On this tour, Crooked Fingers and Azure Ray will act as each other's backing bands, which should prove doubly mesmerizing.
