Hold On Love

Ethereal girls Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor reside in the somber-sweet realm of coffeehouse folk confessional. They're always spilling the beans. "We'll walk this earth somnabulent kin/With broken hearts that cannot mend" they sing on "We Are Mice," an archetypal track from the duo's third album. They love to evoke a mood. And collegiate moodiness is a signature of their Omaha, Nebraska-based label, Saddle Creek, which has corralled a stable of Earnest Young Voices -- most notably the painfully sincere Conor Oberst, a.k.a. Bright Eyes. Azure Ray (originally from Athens, Georgia) fits right in, but can complicate matters nicely: It weaves a kind of soft-core dream pop of gentle harmonies and flowery arrangements on "The Drinks We Drank Last Night," then shifts gears with a subtle electronic vibe ("The Devil's Feet") that animates the duo's stately compositions. If you think Sarah MacLachlan is too square, and Cat Power too weird, Azure Ray should sound just about perfect.
3 bunnies out of 5.
