Oh Holy Fools

07/13/2001 | The Boston Phoenix | Live Show Preview
FRIDAY: Indie-boy heartthrob Connor Oberst, who records under the name Bright Eyes, is from the state of Nebraska, through it might be more helpful to think of him as being a child of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska. Oberst has a brittle voice that's prone to cracking dramatically, and a somber vorld view that's both melancholy and wise. His precocious world-weariness invokes the protective adoration of a faithful who frequently invoke the word “genius" when describing the slow, inflamed ache of his breakthrough Fevers and Mirrors (on Saddle Creek, the outstanding Indie label he helped to found before his 16th birthday). Tonight Oberst - billed as Bright Eyes, of which he is the sole permanent member - plays of a solo show at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard Street in Brookline, in support of a recent EP, Oh, Holy Fools (Also Saddle Creek). Simon Joyner opens. The show is being presented by Cambridge's Middle East; call (617) 864-EAST.
