Oh Holy Fools
An eight song split-album between underwhelming newcomers Son, Ambulance and Bright Eyes and the always masterful Bright Eyes. Son, Ambulance features Bright Eyes' sometime drummer Joe Knapp and, while musically competent, goes downhill quick as soon as the vocals hit. It's also a tough job to hold a candle to Bright Eyes, who hit songwriting gold again and again with every consecitive album. Oh, Holy Fools proves to be no exception. Increasingly complicated musical arrangements float under Conor Oberst's depressive wail (“Oh, You are the Roots..."), ending the album with a strangely optimistic yet intensely effective knock out punch (“Kathy With a K's Song"). Fifty percent forgettable, fifty percent genioius. Buy it for the latter.
