Lifted or The Story is in the Soil....
The nine minute opener takes you back to when Conor was toying with a 4-track recorder, guitar and a microphone. The song titled "The Big Picture" is a very solid representation of the growth and maturing of Conor as an artist and a person. Bright Eyes know just how to show change and growth without disappointing the long time fans. All of the long time fans can feel as if they have grown up with Conor and all of the newcomers can get to know in the meantime.
The second song on the album "Method Acting" shows Bright Eyes as a group and not just as a singer/songwriter, various instruments are added throughout the song, which in my mind make Bright Eyes complete. The voice of the 22 year old musician backed with all of his close friends playing their instruments with all of their hearts. The remainder of the album will show you each and every side of Bright Eyes, if you are not already familiar.
Lifted... is already getting mainstream recognition and outstanding reviews everywhere and will continue to as long as people keep hearing it. Another thing that is often overlooked is the fact that Bright Eyes is still an independent artist, Saddle Creek is a label made up by friends and family. Most of the artist on Saddle Creek are from Omaha Nebraska, there has to be something in the water. My theory that the most amazing music comes from the most unlikely places, is proven.
The ending song "Let's Not Shit Ourselves (To Love and To Be Loved)" is another lengthy song that never lets up, it's ten minutes long but just like a good movie it doesn't seem too long and you just don't want it to end. It starts out with a very twangy folk feel to it and it ends with Conor cussing at "ABC, NBC, and CBS." "They give us fact or fiction? I guess an even split. And each new act of war is tonight's entertainment. We are still the pawns in their game. As they take eye for an eye, until no one can see and we must stumble blindly forward, repeating history. Well, I guess that we all fit into your slogans on that fast food marquee: Red blooded, White Skinned, oh and the blues. I got the Blues, I got the Blue! That's me! That's me!"
It is without a doubt that Lifted or The Story is in the Solid, Keep Your Ear to the Ground is the best representation of what Bright Eyes is now and what they were at the very beginning. Not a better documentation could have been put together. It is also without a doubt that Conor Oberst is defining and redefining music, Bright Eyes is without classification, there is no accurate way to pen down the sound of Bright Eyes. Bright Eyes is a step forward for the world of music. No words could justify the talent that has been crammed into this masterpiece.
