The People's Key

On Bright Eyes' first album in four years, band mastermind Conor Oberst stretches his sound into freaky shapes, but always relaxes back into himself: a strange, sharp lyricist who loves a hook. "The People's Key" is full of trippy stuff. Oberst's voice twists into a malfunctioning robot's squawk on "Beginners Mind." Flaming Lips-style psychedelia closes "One for You, One for Me." Throughout, Denny Brewer (of Refried Ice Cream) chimes in with ghostly narration about love, mercy and reptile people from another dimension. But the heart of the album is Oberst's wordy self-exploration over edgy, catchy rock 'n' roll. Download: "One for You, One for Me."
