Oh Holy Fools

03/01/2001 | Spin Magazine | Album Review
The New Sincerity

Schwingin' their indiepop sensitivity with a passive-aggressiveness even rap-rockers might appreciate, singer/songwriters Joe Knapp (Son, Ambulance) and Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) trade off tunes on this hyper-emo EP, pimp-slapping irony and generally getting Proustian on that ass. Knapp is the wistful minimalist, a Ben Folds sans sarcasm who spins reveries like cotton candy; Oberst is the intense loverboy with a taste for folk-rock pastoralism and a wildly trembling tenor. Oberst shines brightest (see last year's Fevers and Mirrors). But the two yin-yang nicely, and, for a finale, both throw their muses fevered love paeans that'll make you glad neither is dating your sister.
