Fevers and Mirrors

07/13/2000 | Social Deviant Magazine | | Album Review
There is something about Conor's voice that just gets to me. There is something in his voice that makes my throat dry, makes it hard to swallow, and.... There is this brutal honesty in his voice that no one else has. It is so unsure, yet it keeps on going. Words are exaggerated and words are cut short, and after every sentence feels like he will never utter another word again. I don't know how he does it, but he is able to bring out emotions that I just wish weren't ever released. His obsession with death is only highlighted here. An interview with him appears before track 12, and it seems to me that he almost wishes to identify himself as a modern day Holden Caufield. This is just incredible stuff, and Conor
Oberst is an incredible singer and songwriter.
